Formula
Years, months and days are found by counting whole calendar units from the date of birth to today, carrying over from days to months to years the same way you would count on a calendar (accounting for different month lengths and leap years). Total days lived is simply today’s date minus the date of birth, in days.
Worked examples
A birthday earlier this year
Born 12 March 2000, today 29 September 2026: that is 26 years, 6 months and 17 days old, since the March birthday has already passed this year.
A birthday still to come
Born 20 December 1995, today 29 September 2026: that is 30 years, 9 months and 9 days old — the December birthday has not happened yet this year, so the year count has not ticked over.
Age milestones and how different cultures count age
Most of the world uses international age reckoning: you are 0 at birth and turn a year older on each birthday — exactly what this calculator computes. A few East Asian traditions historically counted age differently (for example, "Korean age" traditionally counted a baby as already 1 at birth and added a year every New Year's Day, not on the birthday) — South Korea officially switched to international age for all legal and everyday purposes in June 2023, so international reckoning is now close to universal.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting leap years — February has 29 days roughly one year in four, which shifts month-and-day counts slightly if not accounted for.
- Assuming every month has 30 days — real calendar months range from 28 to 31 days, which changes the exact months-and-days figure.
- Confusing "total days lived" with "days until next birthday" — these are two different numbers shown side by side.
Frequently asked questions
How is exact age calculated?
By counting complete years, then complete months within the current year, then the remaining days — the same way you would count age by hand on a calendar, not by simple date subtraction and division.
Does this account for leap years?
Yes. Because it counts real calendar dates rather than assuming a fixed 365-day year, leap years are handled automatically.
What time zone does it use?
Your device’s local date. If you are close to midnight, the result may shift by a day depending on your time zone.
Can I calculate the age gap between two people?
This tool compares a date of birth to today. To compare two birth dates against each other, subtract one result from the other, or use the total-days-lived figures for each person.
